Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan, also known as the Accessible India Campaign, is celebrating its 9th anniversary today. It is a transformative initiative aimed at creating an accessible and inclusive India for persons with disabilities.
This campaign focuses on improving infrastructure, transportation, and public spaces to make them more accessible, while also raising awareness about the rights and needs of Divyangjan. From accessible public transport to inclusive educational initiatives, this campaign has enabled millions of Divyangjan to lead lives of dignity and respect.
over the past nine years, the Accessible India Campaign has achieved significant milestones in creating a more inclusive environment for persons with disabilities. From retrofitting thousands of government buildings and transport facilities to developing sign language training programs and ensuring accessible TV content, this campaign is laying the groundwork for universal accessibility.
Today, all 35 international airports and 55 out of 69 domestic airports are equipped with ramps, accessible toilets, helpdesks, lifts with Braille and auditory systems, along with aerobridges at international and customs airports. Nearly 709 railway stations have been made fully accessible, with over four thousand stations partially accessible.
Around 6 per cent of buses are fully accessible, and nearly 30 per cent are partially accessible. Under this initiative, more than one thousand individuals have been trained in Indian Sign Language.
