Spices export gets a boost amid Covid pandemic, crosses 7 lakh tonne in India

Kochi: Amid the COVID-19 spread around the globe, India’s spices export crossed 7 lakh tonne during April-September. Compared to 2019, the export of spices has increased by 19 percent in this year.

The annual income from spices export also rose by 16 percent.

In 2020, India exported 7,00,150 tonne spices worth Rs 12,273.81 crore during April-September 2020.

However, 5.86 lakh tonne spices worth Rs 10,588.98 crore was exported during the same period in 2019.
Chilli, cumin seed, turmeric, coriander and ginger topped the list of most exported spices.

Chilli tops in exports

Chilli has topped in the list as the largest exported spice with the shipment of 2.6 lakh tonne worth Rs 3,605 cr in April-September 2020. Cumin was placed in the second position with the export of 1.53 lakh tonne worth Rs 2167.7 cr.

Cardamom export marks growth

Cardamom is the only spice which recorded maximum growth in terms of value and quantity.

Compared to last year, the quantity of cardamom rose by 369 percent and value also increased by 483 percent.

In 2019, 405 tonne cardamom worth Rs 56.52 cr was exported during April-September. Meanwhile, 1,900 tonne cardamom worth Rs 329.50 cr was exported in this year during the same period.

Amid the pandemic outbreak, spices have great demand as it is largely consumed to boost immunity.

The export of turmeric increased by 42 percent. In this year, India exported 99,00 tonne turmeric worth Rs 858.10 cr.

The export of ginger increased by 86 percent and touched 23,700 tonne.

Fenugreek, coriander and seed spices like mustard, aniseed, dill seed etc also marked growth in exports. Nutmeg and mace exports also increased substantially.

Demand increases for value-added products

Value-added products like curry powders, paste and spice mixes from India recorded a great demand in the foreign markets. As per the reports, India exported 19,500 tonne curry powders and pastes worth Rs 462.12 cr during April-September.

Celery, spices oil, substances, saffron and tamarind also recorded growth in export.
