Sailing for Sustainability: The Inspiring Journey of Sagar Parikrama

The Indian government’s initiative to promote responsible fisheries and sustainable marine ecosystems, ‘Sagar Parikrama,’ has entered its third phase. The program aims to disseminate information about various fisheries-related schemes and programs being implemented by the government, demonstrate solidarity with all fisherfolk and fish farmers, promote responsible fisheries, and protect marine ecosystems.

Launch of Sagar Parikrama Phase III

The Sagar Parikrama Phase III was launched on February 19, 2023, from Surat, Gujarat, by the Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, Parshottam Rupala, in collaboration with various dignitaries. The program will end on February 21, 2023, at Sasson Dock, Mumbai.

Interacting with fisherfolk

Fishermen and fish farmers interacted with the dignitaries, highlighting their issues and problems. The Maharashtra Fisheries Minister praised the Sagar Parikrama of 720 Km and emphasized its importance in highlighting their many issues and economic upliftment. He highlighted the vedic importance of Matsya Kanya Devi Satywati, who was related to the Fisheries community.

Promoting responsible fisheries

The program aims to promote responsible fisheries with a focus on sustainable balance between the utilization of marine fisheries resources for the nation’s food security and the livelihoods of coastal fisher communities and the protection of marine ecosystems. The initiative aims to promote responsible fishing practices to ensure that fishing operations are conducted in a sustainable manner without damaging the environment or threatening the livelihoods of fishing communities.

Contribution to oceanographic research

In addition to raising awareness, Sagar Parikrama has also made significant contributions to oceanographic research. During the first circumnavigation, the sailors collected valuable data on ocean currents, weather patterns, and marine life. This information has been used by scientists to better understand our oceans and to develop strategies for their protection.

Expansion of Sagar Parikrama’s reach

Today, Sagar Parikrama continues to inspire and educate people around the world about the importance of ocean conservation. The organization has also expanded its reach, offering programs and resources for students and educators to learn more about the ocean and its ecosystems.

Call to action

As we face growing threats to our oceans, it is more important than ever to support organizations like Sagar Parikrama and to take action to protect our planet’s most precious resources. Whether it’s reducing our use of plastic, supporting sustainable fishing practices, or advocating for policies that protect our oceans, we can all make a difference in protecting our planet for future generations.
