Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw Hails Bairabi–Sairang Line as ‘Historic Milestone’ for Northeast

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has called the inauguration of the crucial Bairabi-Sairang railway line by Prime Minister Narendra Modi today a historic milestone for Mizoram. The rail line will connect the Capital of Mizoram, Aizawl, with the Indian Railways network for the first time in history. Speaking to reporters at Sairang Railway Station, about 20 km from Aizawl, Mr Vaishnaw highlighted the project’s complexity, featuring 45 tunnels and 55 major bridges. He emphasised that the new railway line will significantly improve connectivity and transform the lives of people in Mizoram.

The Minister said that three express trains will also be flagged off today. One is the Sairang- Delhi Rajdhani Express, the other train is the Mizoram Express, which will run daily to Guwahati, and the third will be tri tri-weekly train up to Kolkata. Mr Vaishnaw informed that goods trains will begin arriving in Sairang from tomorrow, enabling easier transport of Mizoram’s fruits and rare agricultural products like dragon fruit to other parts of the country. The Minister noted that railway funding for the Northeast has increased fivefold since 2014 under the Narendra Modi government.
