Post Ayodhya – What next for Hindu Nationalism

Hindus are in a celebratory mood. After all, their centuries old struggle for getting back the Ayodhya site have finally ended and construction of Ram Mandir had begun. Certainly, it is an occasion for celebration. However, question what remains is about the future of Hindu movement, whether we should continue to pursue Mathura and Kashi, or we should be satisfied with our victory in Ayodhya, should we renounce our claims on these sites or let the status quo be maintained. Setting asides the emotions and occasional outbursts, we need to reflect the issue in deeper.

Remember, we got Ayodhya back not due to the change of mindsets of our Muslim populace or due to any magnanimity. We had it because, we struggled long, sacrificed a lot and finally a larger Hindu consensus happened for its construction. Yet unfortunately, Muslims living in our country are never likely to reconcile the ‘loss’ they have suffered. If they are keeping calm, it is only because they are feeling powerless and helpless in front of Hindu determination. Instead, they sincerely believe that on some future date, tide will turn in their favour and they will be ‘recapturing’ the Babri site again.

Hence, Hindus should not be under the illusion that we should close the chapter, move forward and henceforth live in harmony with Muslims by forgetting the past and looking towards the future.  Babar might have dead long back, and Babri Masjid have been dusted a couple of decades back. But the mentality, ideology, ideas, assumptions and belief system that created Baburs and Babri Masjid, have not yet died. These ideas still co-exist with us, these ideologues are still roaming around us, exhorting their comrades that one day, Islam will triumph Indian sub continent. For them, any talk of Hindu Muslim unity, Ganga Jamuna tehzeeb etc are there only to buy time and for arming themselves.  Hindus must never relapse to this illusionary world of Hindu-Muslim unity.

However, if we are ok with relinquishing our claims on Kashi and Mathura, it should be done after extracting a few concessions from Muslims.

  • Muslim leadership should accept that Kashi and Mathura are holy for Hindu faith and there existed temple on the very site where Masjids are standing today.
  • Muslim leadership must be ready to accept that these Masjids were constructed after demolishing the Hindu temples and this act was done by Mughal emperor Aurangazeb in 1667.
  • Muslim leaders should also accept that the primary motive of the Aurangazeb behind this act was the teachings of Islam and the Sharia laws.
  • Muslim leaders should acknowledge that what happened in 1667 was wrong and should not have happened and Aurangazeb had committed a grave injustice upon the Hindu community.
  • They must also accept and acknowledge that present day Muslims are no way proud of, nor are they eulogize of such things that were done by Aurangzeb and his likes.
  • They must accept that it is the Jihadi ideology coupled with iconoclasm of Islam that lead to the temple destruction in the past and the same Jihadi ideas are causing much violence and religious strife even today.
  • Muslim leaders should be ready to shun and publicly deny the Jihadi ideas and has to accept that such kind of Islamic doctrines are no way compatible with the modern day realities.
  • Muslim leadership should acknowledge that much of what Islam ‘teaches’ today is completely against the modern era values and humanistic world view.

It is next to impossible for Muslim masses in general and Muslim leadership in particular to accept the above said points and acknowledge that what they had done was wrong and substantial parts of their belief system are to be discarded.  For them, all what they believe are what their gods commanded upon them and since god (and the prophet) can do no wrong, it is not possible that their beliefs can also go wrong.

It is unlikely that, in the near future, Muslims are going to change their hostile attitude towards non-Muslims. It also highly unlikely that they will acknowledge the misdeeds, committed in the name of Islam, by their ancestors. Hence there is hardly any possibility that any genuine reconcilement between Hindus and Muslims in our country.

For Islam, a world outside their control is a Dar ul Harb (enemy territory) and people living there are Harbis.  Muslims are mandated to bring this enemy territory under the Islamic control through holy war Jihad. This divinely ordained holy war is an altogether different kind of war in its purposes, principle and in method as well.  It’s a never ending war with any provision for peace treaties except as a temporary truce for the Islamists to take rest, recoup and rearm themselves.

Hindus on their part, should not relinquish the claim for Kashi and Mathura, as Muslims, at least in the near to medium future, are not going to change their ideas, outlook, habits and behaviour pattern. We must realize that the ‘peace’ they are talking about is not a permanent peace but only a ceasefire. No permanent peace can happen with Muslims unless we defang the jihadi venom from their religious ideals.

We must always remember, peace is not absence of war or violence. Peace is when there is no any possibility of violence and when people shuns violence as means of achieving social or political objective. As long as Islam legitimise, sanctions and perpetrate violence against everybody else, there can be no peaceful co existence with Islam.  We Hindus can co exist with them as long as we are strong, dominant, and vigilant.  If not, we will be committing the same mistake that our ancestors had committed and our end would be certain.

Disputes over Kashi and Mathura are not just disputes over land rights. They are disputes over principles and hence are fundamental in nature.  Remember, Muslim ‘rights’ over the places of Kashi and Mathura are ‘rights’ acquired through the instruments of Jihad.  Hence, any relinquishment of these lands from our side would be nothing but de-facto legitimisation of ill-gotten property through Jihad.

Ayodhya was the Phase 1 and Kashi and Mathura going to be the Phase 2 of our long drawn civilizational war. If we surrender our legitimate rights at this juncture, we are going to squander away much of what we gained in Phase 1.  Considering the fact that Islamists are sharpening their swords are dreaming about the prospects of Ghazwa e Hind, Hindus can’t ill afford to make any kind of unilateral, non reciprocal concessions to Muslims at this point of time.

Eternal vigilance and prolonged struggle would be the price that we have to pay for upholding the Hindu civilizational flag in our country.
