In 1971, Periyar had held an “anti-superstition rally” in which naked pictures of God Ram and Sita were paraded in public and garlanded with slippers,” revealed Rajnikanth, the mega star at Thuglak magazine’s 50th anniversary event in Chennai on January 14.
His name is ‘Shivaji Rao Gaekwad’ aka Rajnikanth. He was named after “Chhatrapati” and he lived up to his name when he jolted ‘fake Dravidian movement’ to expose Periyar. It is ‘fake Dravidian movement’ because no member of Dravidian parties can give a meaningful explanation for the term ‘Dravidian’ or ‘Dravidam.’ There was neither a culture nor a race that existed before with that term. Sanskrit literature, Bagavatham represents southern Brahmin as Pancha Dravida. And Manu Smriti calls Tamils as Cholas, and terms southern Brahmin as Pancha Dravida as well.
Quite expectedly, when fake Dravidian Movement was shaken, followers of “Periyar,” Father of the Dravidian Movement, started intimidating Rajnikanth to apologise for his comments. Even a complain against Rajnikanth was registered with the Coimbatore police for defaming Periyar. Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam (DVK) also threatened protests outside the theatres showing the actor’s latest movie “Darbar” if he did not apologise. DMK is so rattled with Rajnikanth’s comment that M K Stalin suggested Rajnikanth to think before he speaks.
There are people who call Periyar Erode Venkatappa Ramasamy, a social reformer, who fought to destroy caste discrimination, and fiercely ran movement for social equality. His followers also believed Periyar worked against women oppression.
How did Periyar reform society? By parading naked pictures of God Ram and Goddess Sita garlanded with slippers? Could he have dared to do the same with Muslim and Christians? He was fully aware that he would be blown into pieces if he dared to do the same with Muslims and Christians. Therefore, he never mustered his courage to criticise regressive and misogynist practices of Islam.
While fighting for equality he focussed on ending the economic & political dominance of Brahmins. Was suppressing and torturing Brahmins only way to bring equality and social reforms? Did it work?
Is it true Periyar married his adopted daughter half of his age at the age of 72? Is this how he was working against women oppression?
Until Independence Periyar had pleaded with the Viceroy’s representative not to leave power in Tamil Nadu, even if they departed from the rest of India. It would not be exaggeration if Periyar is called Jinnah of South, as it was he who mobilised a movement for separate ‘Dravida Nadu’ for Dravidians. He even went on the extent of seeking support from Jinnah to form ‘Dravida Nadu.’ However, Jinnah didn’t oblige him and rebuked him to stand on his own legs.
While Periyar vociferously opposed Hindi but welcomed English in Tamil Nadu, he injected fake Aryan-Dravidian theory to separate South India from North. Only difference between Jinnah and Periyar was Jinnah succeeded to form Pakistan while Periyar failed to Tamil Nadu as separate ‘Dravida Nadu’ for Dravidians.
