Paving the way for sustainable development, India’s first E-highway to change the public transportation system

Increasing the resilience in gearing towards Sustainable Development, India’s proposed electric highway project is expected to be a substantial step. Recently, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has said that India will get its first electric highway which is likely to come up between Delhi and Jaipur soon.
The Ministry is already in talks with a foreign company to construct the highway between these two cities.

The minister has also urged foreign investment in the highways sector and had earlier invited the EU to build an electric highway in the country. He further said that 22 green expressways were on the anvil and work has already been started on many of them.

“It is my dream to build an electric highway from Delhi to Jaipur. It is still a proposed project. We are in discussion with a foreign company,” he said. Nitin Gadkari also said he aims to bring an end to the use of petrol and diesel and transform public transports like buses and trucks into electric vehicles soon.

About an electric highway

The batteries of vehicles travelling on an electric highway or roads are recharged which is regarded as an energy-efficient solution that aids in the reduction of carbon emissions.

A Catalyst in E-vehicle adoption:

E-highways not only help to reduce fuel consumption and pollution, but they will also greatly assist in increasing the number of people turning to e-vehicles and purchasing them since the lack of charging stations and ports is one of the primary barriers to people acquiring them.

With the world shifting away from traditional fuels to alternative sources of energy for transportation, electricity is becoming the most common choice for powering vehicles. If the proposed electric highway is built, electric vehicles would be allowed to travel on the stretch — the first of these will be between Delhi and Jaipur.

Other E-highways in the world

The world’s first electrified road, which recharges the batteries of vehicles and trucks travelling on it was opened in Sweden in 2018. Later in the year 2019, Germany introduced the first electric highway on its motorway system to recharge hybrid trucks.

Electric vehicles: The future of transportation

Noticing a significant growth in EV charging infrastructure, the central government has extended the policy support to bolster the mass adoption of EVs in the country.

In India, there lies a huge scope for growth in the Electric Mobility sector, including several other aspects related to it, such as Charging Infrastructure, battery recycling, reuse, and adoption among the masses
