Onam, the state festival of Kerala, shall be celebrated on August 31 this year. However, it is not the only day for celebrations. Out of the twelve days, the last four days are of great significance. The festivities begin in the Chingam month when Atham/Hasta Nakshatra prevails. However, the last few days calls for massive celebrations. According to the drikpanchang, the timings are as follows:
Onam 2020 important dates
- The first Onam day, Uthradom will be observed on August 30.
- The Uthradam Nakshatra begins at 1:03 PM on August 29 and ends at 1:52 PM on August 30.
- The second Onam day, Thiruvonam will be observed on August 31.
- The Thiruvonam Nakshatra begins at 1:52 PM on August 30 and ends at 3:04 PM on August 31.
- The third Onam day, Avvittom will be celebrated on September 1.
- The Avittam Nakshatra begins at 3:04 PM on August 31 and ends at 4:38 PM on September 1.
- The concluding Onam day, Chatayam will be celebrated on September 2.
- The Chathayam Nakshatra begins at 4:38 PM on September 1 and ends at 6:34 PM on September 2.
How is Onam celebrated?
Onam, which is associated with the Vamana Avatar of Lord Vishnu, is also celebrated as the festival of paddy harvest. During the festival, people get dressed in their traditional attire, prepare the Onam Sadhya and take part in a variety of group activities such as the Pookolam (rangoli made with fresh flowers), Vallam Kali (boat race), Pulikali (tiger dance), Kai Kottu Kali (Onam dance), Kummattikali (mask dance) and various other activities.
