The downfall followed widespread protests led mainly by the younger generation, expressing anger over government corruption, nepotism, and restrictive policies. The protests gained momentum after the government imposed a ban on 26 popular social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Citizens perceived this move as an attempt to suppress dissent and protect political elites from public scrutiny.

The protests, which began in early September 2025, quickly spread nationwide. Demonstrators used platforms like TikTok to highlight the stark contrast between the lavish lifestyles of politicians and the struggling conditions of ordinary citizens.
