Nepal: Agni Sapkota elected speaker of House of Representatives,lower house of parliament

The ruling Nepal Communist Party’s Agni Sapkota has been elected as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the lower house of Parliament in Nepal. A meeting of the House of Representatives was held in Kathmandu yesterday to elect the Speaker.

The senior-most member of the house, Mahanta Thakur announced that being lone candidate, Mr Sapkota was elected unopposed. His name was proposed by Subhash Chandra Nembang of Nepal Communist Party.

Mr. Sapkota will take oath of office and secrecy today. The post of Speaker was lying vacant since October last year after Mr Krishna Bahadur Mahara resigned following allegations of attempted rape.
