NBM launches MIS module for strengthening domestic Agarbatti industry

The National Bamboo Mission has launched an MIS (Management Information Systems) based reporting platform for agarbatti stick production. With the help of this module, information can be collected about the locations of stick-making units, working raw material supply units, production capability, marketing, and other factors. Also, Industry’s linkages would be better synergized, allowing smooth procurement direct from the production units.

All NBM (National Bamboo Mission) States have started documenting and collecting more information of all units in order to have more support in getting appropriate funding for ‘Vocal for Local’ and ‘Make for the World’ since Indian agarbatti are much sought after in global markets.

The National Bamboo Mission (NBM), the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), the Khadi and Village Industries Commission’s (KVIC) schemes as well as States and, together with industry partners, have increased the concentrated funding to allow India to become Atma Nirbhar in the agarbatti market, restoring livelihoods for local communities while modernizing the sector.

Significance of Agarbatti Industry

The agarbatti industry employs a large number of people in India, but it has declined due to various factors, including the influx of low-cost round sticks and raw batti. NBM conducted a detailed report in 2019, after which the Government took steps such as shifting raw batti imports from the free to a restricted category in August 2019 and increased the import duty on round sticks which came as a boost to these domestic units.

As a result, in the last one and a half years, nearly Three lakh new jobs have been produced in this sector as new Agarbatti and bamboo stick manufacturing units have been opened in the country.

About National Bamboo Mission

The restructured National Bamboo Mission (NBM) was launched in 2018-19 with the goal of developing the bamboo sector holistically by harnessing the opportunities of connecting farmers directly to markets.
The aim of the mission is to foster bamboo sector growth from supply to market demand by promoting skill development, capacity building, and generating awareness.

This mission also aims to realign the efforts of reducing dependency on the import of bamboo and bamboo products by improving productivity.

By incorporating the latest technology, advanced packaging, and increasing knowledge on compliance criteria, there is a tremendous opportunity to put Indian bamboo products in both domestic and global markets. With the help of technical agencies, the Mission is also streamlining its initiatives in order to boost domestic economic activities to increase the farmers’ profits by a huge margin.

Under this mission, Farmers can receive a 50% direct subsidy whereas, Government departments and entrepreneurs can receive a 100 % subsidy for establishing different production units. The Mission is currently being carried out by 21 states.

To uplift the farming community and the Indian bamboo industry, NBM is also recommending States to make quality material available to farmers so that they can carry out plantations well, also common facility centres and other post-harvest units should be set up in full sync with the requirements of current and sunrise industries.
