The Madras High Court has granted an interim stay against filing charge sheet against the Congress MP Karti Chidambaram in a tax evasion case. Mr Karti is the son of the Congress senior leader P.Chidambaram.
The case relates to the disposal of his property near Chennai in which the Income Tax Department said he and his wife failed to disclose 1.35 crore rupees from the total sale value.
A case was filed in 2018 before the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Chennai. It was later transferred to the special court for MPs and MLAs. Mr Karti and his wife filed a discharge petition which was rejected.
The court fixed today, the 21st January as the date for filing of the charge sheet. Meanwhile, they went on an appeal before the Madras High Court. The High Court today granted an interim stay from filing charge sheet till the 27th of this month and posted the case for further hearing the same day.
