Kodagu district, called the “Scotland of Karnataka” will soon see a change in its map. Presently, this picturesque district in south-west Karnataka has three taluks: Madikeri, Somwarpet and Virajpet.
Two rapidly-growing towns, Kushalanagara and Ponnampet, have been granted taluk status.
Kushalanagar, a part of Somwarpet taluk, is in north-east Kodagu. It is located on the route from Mysuru to Madikeri. Kushalanagar is the largest and the fastest developing city of Kodagu district. This city was said to be established in 1750.
Ponnampet is a town in Virajpet taluk in south Kodagu. It is located on the southward route from Gonikoppalu towards Srimangala-Kutta. This town was established in 1821 as a mark of honour to Diwan Cheppudira Ponnappa. This major town has all the basic amenities and also has educational institutions, taluk offices, banks, government institutions and so on.
The people of Kushalanagar and Ponnampet have been demanding taluk status. Their efforts have at last yielded results. Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, ministers Puttaraju and RV Deshpande took this proposal and got the approval from the cabinet. Kumaraswamy will announce the two new districts when he visits Kodagu on 28th,
