Karnataka is celebrating the 526th birth anniversary of legendary Kannada saint poet, composer- musician Kanakadasa who lived in the 16th Century during the Vijayanagara Empire. Kanakadasa’s keertanas and upabhoga with social messages are very popular in the state. Born in a family of shepherds, he came to be known as Bhakta Kanakadasa for his devotion to God. He has composed prominent works like Narasimha stotra, Rama Dhyana Mantra and Mohana Tarangini.
Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa garlanded the statue of Kanakadasa and gave away Kanaka Shri, Kanaka Gaurav and Kanaka Yuva Puraskar to recognize and honour individuals who promote values and literature of Kanakadasa. Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Yediyurappa recalled the message given by Kanakadasa in his keerthana that we must not fight in the name of caste and community and only good man’s true worth must matter.
