IPL 2020 to start on September 26? Speculations rife on social media over T20 league’s resumption

The discussions over the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 might still be in the preliminary stage but speculations on social media are rife about the 13th edition of the league kicking-off on September 26 this year. A news report surfaced suggesting there are ‘80% chances’ of the league starting in the last week of September in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and fans didn’t waste time in spreading the news like wildfire.

The report further states that the BCCI is all but ready to release the revised schedule of the league and it can be expected next week. As part of the whole process, Indian cricketers will travel to Dubai to start their camp in the third week of August till the first week of September. After that, they will join their respective franchises for IPL camps.

While these are still speculations, fans believe that the schedule of the tournament has been finalised, with the start on September 26 and final on November 6th.

It was a Sportskeeda report that quoted a source as saying: “It’s the only likely option for the BCCI now. It is 80 per cent certain that this will be the schedule. BCCI is getting all the approvals in place”.

What was discussed in the BCCI Apex Council meeting?

The BCCI Apex Council meeting took place on Friday where the discussions over IPL Season 13’s venue were in prime focus. As per reports, UAE, as well as Maharashtra, are the two frontrunners for the tournament. The final call, however, will be taken after consultation with the government.

As for the training camp, Ahmedabad’s Motera Stadium – the world’s largest cricket stadium – could also hold the camp involving BCCI-contracted Indian players. The stadium has quality accommodation which will serve well considering the current COVID-19 situation.

Where will the IPL 2020 be held?

The Indian board is reportedly set to give two proposals to the government over hosting IPL this year — one in UAE and other in Maharashtra — and only after taking into consideration the government’s suggestion will the final call be taken.

Maharashtra came into the picture because of the fact that it has multiple venues in Pune and Mumbai. UAE, meanwhile, has more-or-less controlled the spread of COVID-19 and is in a better position to host the IPL in comparison to other overseas options.

The ease of flying in overseas players in Dubai further makes it a hot favourite to host the T20 league this year. With the rising number of COVID-19 cases in India, there’s no denying that UAE indeed is a safer and logistically the most convenient option for BCCI.
