In what will officially sideline United Nations’ role in the Kashmir issue, India, on Tuesday, called for permanently listing Jammu and Kashmir matter as ‘outdated agenda item’. The move comes on the backdrop of Pakistan’s repeated attempts to rake up the Kashmir issue at the global body.
Indirectly snubbing Pakistan over its repeated attempts to raise Kashmir issue – more vociferously after the abrogation of Article 370 – India said that such ‘irrational exuberance’ has no place in a dignified world.
“There is a delegation that repeatedly attempts to rebrand itself as contributing to international peace, but unfortunately fails to recognise that it is globally known for being the fountainhead of international terror and the hub for terror syndicates,” a statement by India said.
“This delegation keeps pushing for discussions on an outdated agenda item in the Council, which for all matter needs to be removed from the Council’s agenda permanently. Such irrational exuberance has no takers in a dignified world,” India said.
UNSC last discussed the matter officially in 1965
It may be noted that the ‘India-Pakistan question’ was first considered by the security council on January 6, 1948, and was last discussed on November 5, 1965.
While Pakistan, backed by its all-weather friend China, has been seeking a discussion on Jammu and Kashmir, the UNSC held a closed consultation on the matter in August last year after China sought a discussion in light of India’s August 5 decision to abrogate Article 370. The discussion remained non-conclusive.
Beijing had once again called for a discussion on the matter on August 5 this year, the first anniversary of India’s decision to abrogate Article 370. However, the discussions have derived no outcome.
While Pakistan has made several attempts to internationalize the Kashmir issue, it has received a muted response not just from global bodies, but even from its own allies.
