India outclassed Australia in all departments during their World Cup 2019 clash on Sunday and earned victory in second straight match of the ongoing tournament. India defeated Aussie by 36 runs by putting a massive target of 353 runs for the defending champions.
The Australian batsmen and bowlers eventually failed to show their strength in both the innings. While the bowlers gave away enormous 352 runs in the first innings, batsmen could not chase down the mammoth target and were eventually all out for 316 in 50 overs. While Aussie players failed on their end, India players accelerated with performance by creating and breaking many records. Here are some notable mentions.
Shikhar’s surplus milestones
- Shikhar Dhawan scored 6th ODI century in ICC ODI tournaments i.e. Champions Trophy and World Cup, equalling record of Ricky Ponting and Kumar Sangakkara. Only Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly are ahead in this record with 7 centuries each.
- Dhawan now has 3 World Cup tons, and shares it with Ganguly who also has same number of World Cup hundreds. Sachin (6) has most number of World Cup centuries.
- Dhawan became the first Indian player to score 4 ODI centuries on English soil. He is the second visiting batsmen to achieve the milestone.
- With just 19 innings, Dhawan became fastest cricketer to reach 1000 ODI runs.
- Dhawan smashed 117 against Australia, which is third-highest score by a batsman against Australia in World Cup tournaments.
- Dhawan and Rohit Sharma, who made 127-run opening partnership, shared their 16th 100-run partnership. Only Sachin and Ganguly have more (26).
- India now has most number of centuries in history of World Cups. India (27) surpassed Australia (26) with Dhawan’s ton.
352: A mamath WC total
- Total of 352 was India’s fourth highest in World Cup leagues, highest being 413 against Bermuda in World Cup 2007.
- This was also India’s highest score against Australia in World Cup. This was also the highest score by any team against Aussie in World Cup game.
Other records
- Rohit Sharma became fastest batsmen to reach 2000 ODI runs against Australia in just 37 innings. Sachin achieved this milestone in 40 innings.
- MS Dhoni played his 340th match for India, eqaully Rahul Dravid’s record. MS is now only behind Sachin (460), who has most ODI caps for India.
