India records 88,600 new cases, 1,124 deaths in last 24 hours; Covid-19 tally inches closer to 60 lakh

With 88,600 new positive cases of coronavirus infection and 1,124 deaths in the last 24 hours, the total number of Covid-19 patients in the country inched closer to 60 lakh mark on Sunday, as per the latest update by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).

The country’s Covid-19 tally now stands at 59,92,533, while the death toll has mounted to 94,503. Of the total cases, 49,41,627 have been successfully treated while one case has been migrated from the country. There are 9,56,402 active cases of Covid-19 in India.

Maharashtra continues to be the worst affected by the coronavirus outbreak in the country with Covid-19 tally crossed 13 lakh mark. The total number of positive cases in the state has climbed to 13,21,176 and 35,191 deaths, according to the Union Health Ministry. 

Andhra Pradesh has become the second-worst hit in the country with 6,68,751 confirmed cases and 5,663  deaths. Tamil Nadu is placed at the third spot having reported 5,75,017 Covid-19 cases and 9,233 deaths, followed by Karnataka (5,66,023 lakh cases, 8,503 deaths) and (2,67,822 cases and 5,193 deaths).

A total of 7,12,57,836 samples tested up to September 26 for Covid-19. Of these, 9,87,861 samples were tested yesterday, said the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) today morning.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that  India as the world’s biggest vaccine maker will use its resources “for all humanity” in the battle against Covid-19.

“As the largest vaccine producing country of the world… India’s vaccine production and delivery capacity will be used to help all humanity in fighting this crisis,” he said while addressing the virtual UN General Assembly.
