India overtakes Brazil to become second worst-affected country in the world

With the number of coronavirus cases breaching the 4.2 million mark, India has now become the second worst-hit country by the pandemic, overtaking Brazil.

Brazil has so far reported 4,137,521 COVID-19 cases and 1,26,650 deaths, according to John Hopkins University. The United States is the worst-affected country across the globe with 6.2 million infections and 1.8 million deaths. 

The country on Monday reported its highest single-day spike of 90,802 new cases of coronavirus, setting a global record.

With the record surge in COVID-19 cases in a span of 24 hours, the total number of infections in the country has now climbed to 42,04,614.

Of the total cases, 32,50,428 have been successfully treated while one case has been migrated from the country. There are 8,82,542 active cases of COVID-19 in India and all are under medical supervision.

The death toll has increased to 71,642 in the country with 1,016 more persons succumbing to the viral infection in the last 24 hours, according to the latest data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

“India’s COVID-19 case tally crosses 42 lakh mark with a spike of 90,802 new cases and 1,016 deaths reported in the last 24 hours. The total case tally stands at 42,04,614 including 8,82,542 active cases, 32,50,429 cured/discharged/migrated and 71,642 deaths,” the ministry said.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research,  a cumulative total of 4,95,51,507 samples have been tested so far, of which 7,20,362 samples were tested on Sunday.

Maharashtra continues to be the worst-affected by the coronavirus outbreak in the country with the COVID-19 tally crossing over 8.7 lakh in the state. Andhra Pradesh is the second worst-hit state, followed by Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi.

5 states, 1 UT with high COVID-19 cases asked to scale up testing

Five states and one UT with high active COVID-19 caseload and fatality rate have been asked to scale up testing and strengthen containment measures to check the spread of coronavirus.

As many as 35 districts in these states and UT have been reporting high active COVID-19 caseload. These districts include all 11 districts in Delhi, Kolkata, Howrah, North 24 Parganas and 24 South Parganas in West Bengal; Pune, Nagpur, Thane, Mumbai, Mumbai Suburban, Kolhapur, Sangli, Nashik, Ahmednagar, Raigad, Jalgaon, Solapur, Satara, Palghar, Aurangabad, Dhule and Nanded in Maharashtra; Surat in Gujarat; Pondicherry in Puducherry and East Singhbhum in Jharkhand.
