India, China hold consultations on UNSC agenda, wide range of issues discussed

Indian side briefed the Chinese side “on India’s priorities during its UNSC tenure,” the external affairs ministry said in a brief statement. Both sides discussed a wide range of issues on the UNSC agenda.

The two sides also agreed to continue their engagement on key issues on the Security Council’s agenda, the statement said. India began a two-year stint as a non- permanent member of the Security Council earlier this month.

Last year, the Indian ida listed an effective response to global terror reforming comprehensive approach to international peace and security, and promoting technology with a human touch among its priorities for its the multilateral system, stint in the Security Council.

Prakash Gupta, Joint Secretary (UNP & Summits) led the Indian delegation along with officials from East Asia (EA) and UN Economic and Social (UNES) Divisions of MEA and from the Permanent Mission of India New York and Embassy of India in Beijing.

The Chinese delegation was led by Yang Tao, Director General of the Department of International Organizations and Conferences, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China.

Chinese Foreign Ministry in a statement said sides exchanged that both views on safeguarding multilateralism, United Nations peacekeeping operations, counter-terrorism and other issues.

This bilateral consultation is in addition to the recent interactions between the two countries through Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) on border affairs and senior military commanders that foc on taking forward disengagement and escalation along the disputed border.

External affairs minister S Jaishankar and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met their Chinese counterparts on the margins of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meetings in Moscow last September.

(SCO) The Special Representatives on the border issue have also held consultations, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping have participated in several summit meetings level virtual of multilateral organisations.
