IIT Kanpur scientist made unique mat, applied for Indian patent

Scientists from IIT Kanpur have developed a MAT under the Make in India program with the help of Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Which is a sticky mat that incorporates dust particles from the exposed surface to ensure a clean, hygienic and refreshing environment at home, office, hospital and laboratory. It also ensures the smooth functioning of expensive and sensitive devices by keeping them clean. With this mat being cheaper, it can be washed and used again and again.

Lizard claw inspired pad

Professor Animangshu Ghatak of IIT Kanpur’s Department of Chemical Engineering has developed this mat. He developed it by looking at the wall-climbing fauna, such as pads sticking to the claws of the lizard found in homes.

How to use again

Adhesive (adhesive) present in the mat pulls dust particles towards it with the help of super pyramidal shaped bump on its surface. So that when we step on it, the soles of our shoes are cleaned. When the adhesive is completely filled with dust particles, it is cleaned in the same way that we wash our clothes. After that its surface is ready to start its work once again and in this way it can be used hundreds of times.

Indian patent application filed

Scientists have worked on the idea of ​​preparing it in different sizes, keeping in mind the large area for the development of the mat, the control of the surface shape by simple methods, the possibility of washing and reuse.

It has been certified and an application for an Indian patent has been filed for sticky mats. It is easy to prepare and wash, environmentally friendly, inexpensive and can replace materials imported for this purpose. The product closest to Sticky Mate is the 3M Sticky Mate but cannot be washed and reused.

Matt will be commercialized

It can be used in ICU of MAT hospitals. Can be used as a component of air filters in chambers and facilities holding sensitive equipment. This technology is important for every place where cleanliness and hygiene is required. At the level of technology readiness level, the product is at 7-8 levels and is yet to be commercialized. Experimental plants are being built to produce it on a large scale.
