To test the capabilities of S-400 missile systems, the Indian Air Force is looking forward to conducting the maiden firing of the Russia-origin ordnance. India has already deployed two squadrons of the S400 missiles, one at the north-western front and the other at the northern frontier.
According to reports, Indian forces had conducted a test fire of the S-400 missiles in Russia during its trials, but the same has not taken place in India yet. In the upcoming first firing, the test will be conducted using small or medium-range missiles to engage a fast-moving aerial target.
India had inked a deal of around Rs 35,000 crore with Russia for acquiring five squadrons of the S-400 air defence system. Out of the five, three have already been delivered to India. The delivery of the remaining squadrons of the S-400 systems is expected to be completed by the next fiscal year.
The S-400
The S-400 Triumf surface-to-air missile is considered to be one of the most sophisticated air defence systems in the world, boasting a range of 400 km. Interestingly, the air defence system is also capable of spotting, tracking, and shooting down approaching enemy drones, jets, spy planes, and ballistic missiles.
The air defence system comes with four distinct missiles. The different missiles are capable of engaging enemy threats at the range of 400 km and 250 km. It can also hit targets at the medium range of 120 km and the short-range 40 km.
The addition of the S-400 missile systems in the IAF’s inventory and its upcoming test-firing would prove to be a force multiplier at a time when the country has seen recently seen the raising of its first Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM) Regiment.
