Heavy to very heavy rains & squally winds during May 8-12



Owing to the influence of cyclonic circulation over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Sea, a
low pressure area continues to form over the same region on 8th May also. It is likely to intensify into a
depression over Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining South Andaman Sea around 9th May. Thereafter,
it may intensify into a cyclonic storm while moving nearly northwards towards central Bay of Bengal
and adjoining north Andaman Sea. Due to the effect of this Cyclone Mocha, there may be a heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorm some parts of the country including Madhya Pradesh.

The details of the Cyclone Mocha like its path and intensification, are being monitored regularly. IMD has issued rainfall warning for a few regions. It has warned a moderate rainfall at most places during 8th-12th with scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall. Isolated extremely heavy falls are also very likely over Andaman & Nicobar Islands on 10th and 11th May and isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall on 8th, 9th and 12th May 2023.

IMD has also issued wind warning for several regions of the country. It has said that squally weather with wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely to prevail over southeast Bay of Bengal, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and adjoining Andaman Sea on 8th May also like 7th May.

The weather organisation has also said that the wind speed would gradually increase becoming 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph over southeast Bay of Bengal, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and adjoining Andaman Sea on 9th May.

It has said that the wind speed would further increase gradually becoming 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph over southeast
and adjoining central Bay of Bengal, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Andaman Sea on 10th and 11th May.

In the meantime, Madhya Pradesh is also expected to be affected by the cyclonic storm ‘Mocha’ arising from the Bay of Bengal. According to the Meteorological Department, in some parts of the state, there will be a thunderstorm with a speed of 40 km per hour, then there may be light rain or drizzle. In such a situation, the heat of summer can turn cold again.

Meanwhile, the heat wave remained intense on Sunday. Light rain occurred in Mandla and Seoni in the state, while the temperature in Ratlam-Narsinghpur reached 41 degrees. For the first time in May in Indore, the temperature reached 41.9 degrees, while in Gwalior it crossed 40 degrees. The temperature in Bhopal and Jabalpur was more than 38 degrees.

Meanwhile, sea conditions are likely to be rough over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Sea
and very rough from 9th May onwards. It is likely to be very rough to high over southeast and adjoining central Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea from 10th May onwards till 12th May.

The weather organisation has also released advisories for the people, especially fishermen, small ships, boats and trawlers, as they have been advised not to venture into southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of Andaman Sea and into southeast & adjoining central Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea from 9th May onwards.

It has said that those who are over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Sea, are advised to return
to safer places and those over central Bay of Bengal and north Andaman Sea are advised to return before 9th May.

Moreover, regulation of tourism and offshore activities and shipping near Andaman and Nicobar Islands during
8th – 12th May and regulation of shipping activity over the sea areas of southeast & central Bay of Bengal and Andaman
Sea during 8th-12th May is also being done by the concerned agencies.
