Asia’s largest railway network and India’s national carrier, Indian Railways, is set to move to renewable energy by 2030. In the process, it aims to achieve full electrification by 2023. This step is taken to minimise the carbon footprint by reducing the number of trains running on diesel. Hence, the entire rail network will run with electric locomotives. The transformation plan for rail has been announced by Railway Minister Piyush Goyal in his address at Maritime-India Summit 2021.
Electrification of Rail Lines by 2023
A number of initiatives are taken by the government in order to transform rail network of India into ‘Green Railways’ by 2030. Indian Railways has completed electrification of more than 40,000 Route kilometre (RKM) (which is 63 per cent of total broad-gauge routes) in which 18,605 km electrification work has been done during 2014-20. By the end of 2023, a target of 23,765 (RKM) is set to be achieved. Indian Railways has fixed a target of electrification of 6,000 RKM for the year 2021-22, while 6,000 RKM target has been achieved in the year 2020-21.
To expedite electrification of railway lines in the country, a budget of Rs 6,326 has been allocated in the year 2020-21.
Towards a pollution-free future
The electrification of railways is a step closer to a pollution-free future. The target of electrification of the entire railway in the next few years has been set, making it the world’s first carbon emission-free railway. Along with that, the railways are producing solar energy for their power needs.
In his address, Union Minister Goyal emphasised the integration of Road, Rail and Waterways which can help India achieve ‘One Nation, One Market, One Supply’. The government is working on multi-modal logistical solutions to bring down the cost of transportation and increase supply chain efficiency. Upgrade, Create and Dedicate are the three mantras for the development of the infrastructure sector in India.
