Govt reiterates no Indian of any religion or region will be adversely impacted by Citizenship Amendment Act

Government has clarified that no Indian citizens of any religion or any region will be robbed off his or her citizenship with enactment of Citizenship Amendment Act. Government has urged the people to not to get mislead by misinformation about this act.

Government has reiterated that Citizenship Amendment Act is just an enabling legislation for persons belonging to six minority communities of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. It has been proposed on humanitarian grounds as these minorities had fled from these three countries due to persecution on the basis of their religion. It does not takes away citizenship from anyone. It is a myth that documents to prove citizenship need to be collected right now else people will be deported. Centre has made it clear that no nationwide NRC has been announced. Whenever it is announced, rules and guidelines will be framed in such a way that no Indian citizens face any harassment.

Addressing a largely attended BJP Dhanyawad rally at Ramlila Grounds in New Delhi yesterday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed to the people to shun violence and not to damage public property. Mr. Modi said, the Citizenship Amendment Act and National Register of Citizens (NRC) have nothing to do with the people of a particular religion. He dared his opponents to find anything discriminatory in his efforts while citing the government’s developmental programs. The Prime Minister dismissed existence of any detention camps. He accused the opposition of playing vote bank politics by spreading such mis-information. He appealed to the youth not to fall a prey to such rumours trying to divide the country.

Mr Modi condemned the attacks on the police during the protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act. He said, whenever there is a crisis or difficulty, the police never asks a person their religion. The Prime Minister also targeted the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP government in Delhi over a range of issues including alleged supply of dirty water, transportation and pollution in the city.
