Union Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Nitin Gadkari today said the government plans to create five crore jobs in the MSME sector and increase its contribution to GDP from 29 to 50 per cent in the next five years.
He was addressing a business summit titled “Globalizing the Brand Khadi: The Pride of India” in Mumbai.
The Minister stressed the need to strengthen Khadi sector as a large segment of the population is dependent on it. He said Khadi needs to be modernised in terms of product design, fashion design, weaving and other processes. Calling the private sector to come forward and promote Khadi, Mr. Gadkari said the government is working on support measures, like reducing the cost of capital, bringing in mechanization and modernization, and reducing logistics and power costs. He added that the Government is developing an e-market portal like Alibaba, by the name of Bharat Craft, which will provide a direct interface between buyers and sellers.
