When we see Microsoft pushing ads about its Edge browser through its own software and service, to some extent it is understandable because the browser doesn’t have a large market share under it for now. However, Google does. But the search giant is still seen pulling a Microsoft when you log in to Gmail via the Edge browser. As spotted by Techdows website, Google doesn’t place a subtle advertisement anywhere on its Gmail (It never did). But instead, it will send you a full-fledged email alert, basically asking you to download Chrome for the ‘best experience’.
The email states “Hi, you’ve just signed in on a new computer. Make most of Windows 10 with Chrome browser. Chrome is a fast, simple, and secure browser built for the modern web. Download Chrome.” Although Google, just like Microsoft, is free to show anything on its website and browser. However, being the leader in the browser market with almost 70% share, this seems quite ‘needy’ from the search giant. Of course, it is just a single mail in your inbox, but it still is an annoying one.
According to Net Market Share website’s May figures for desktop and mobile combined, Google Chrome sits on 66.35% of the entire pie. And this is nowhere close to the browser that comes second, Safari, which has 16.88% share. On third, is Firefox with 3.30% share and following that is Microsoft Edge with 3.17%.
That said, Microsoft has already introduced a bunch of new Edge features that are in the process of being rolled out to end users. This includes everything from Microsoft Edge Add-on site, to improved PWAs, updating the Collections section, Sidebar Search and more. These are likely to bring more users onboard. However, to gain more traction, the Redmond-based tech firm is also pushing out the Chromium-based Edge browser to all its users as a part of the latest Windows 10 update.
