From MGR to EPS: The Rise, Fall and Future of AIADMK

Tamil Nadu politics has long revolved around two major Dravidian parties, the DMK and the AIADMK. After dominating the state’s politics for decades, the AIADMK is currently going through one of the toughest phases in its history. Consecutive defeats in recent Assembly and Lok Sabha elections have raised questions about the party’s future and survival.

Here’s a look at how this iconic party began and what lies ahead for it in Tamil Nadu politics.

How Did AIADMK Begin?

The AIADMK was born out of ideological differences and the rise of a charismatic political leader.

In the 1950s and 60s, M.G. Ramachandran, popularly known as MGR, was Tamil cinema’s biggest superstar and one of the most popular faces of the DMK. After the death of DMK founder C.N. Annadurai, M. Karunanidhi became Chief Minister. Over time, differences between MGR and Karunanidhi started growing.

MGR openly raised questions about corruption within the party, which eventually led to his expulsion from the DMK in 1972.

Soon after, on October 17, 1972, MGR founded a new political party called the Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (ADMK), which was later renamed the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).

Thanks to MGR’s massive popularity among the public, the party rose quickly. In the 1977 Assembly elections, AIADMK secured a huge victory and MGR became Chief Minister. He remained in power until his death in 1987.

The Jayalalithaa Era

After MGR’s death, the party faced internal divisions and uncertainty. However, J. Jayalalithaa successfully united the factions and emerged as MGR’s political successor.

Under Jayalalithaa’s leadership, AIADMK became one of the strongest political forces in Tamil Nadu. Known as “Amma” among supporters, she led the party to power multiple times and built a strong welfare-based image.

Current Challenges Facing AIADMK

Since Jayalalithaa’s death in 2016, AIADMK has struggled with a leadership crisis. In the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the party suffered a major defeat against the DMK led by M.K. Stalin in 2021.

AIADMK delivered a mixed performance in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The party improved its visibility compared to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, but it could not return to power. According to reported results, AIADMK won around 47 seats as part of the NDA alliance, while the emerging party TVK led by actor Vijay became the biggest surprise of the election.

The party’s performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections was also disappointing.

Several reasons are being seen behind the decline:

Lack of Charismatic Leadership

After MGR and Jayalalithaa, the party has not found a leader with a strong emotional connection with voters across Tamil Nadu.

Internal Power Struggles

For years, AIADMK remained divided due to the leadership battle between O. Panneerselvam (OPS) and Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS). Although EPS has now emerged as the dominant leader, the internal conflict weakened the party organization.

Alliance Issues

AIADMK’s long association with the BJP affected its support among minorities and traditional Dravidian voters. Though the party ended its alliance with the BJP in 2023, it has not yet gained major political benefits from the move.

What Does the Future Hold for AIADMK?

Despite recent setbacks, AIADMK still has a strong grassroots network across Tamil Nadu. The party’s future now depends on how effectively its leadership can reorganize and reconnect with voters.

Strong Opposition Role

AIADMK needs to position itself as a powerful opposition against the ruling government. The party must actively raise public issues such as corruption, law and order, and welfare concerns to remain politically relevant.

Connecting with Young Voters

The party’s traditional support base is aging. To attract younger voters, AIADMK must modernize its campaign style, communication, and political messaging.

Building Strategic Alliances

Ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, alliances with regional parties such as PMK and DMDK could play a key role in preventing opposition votes from splitting.

Reclaiming Dravidian Identity

The DMK has strongly projected itself as the protector of Tamil identity and Dravidian ideology. AIADMK may need to return to its original ideological roots linked to leaders like Annadurai and Periyar to regain voter trust.

AIADMK has survived major crises

AIADMK has survived major crises in the past, including the turmoil after MGR’s death. Even though the party appears politically weak today, it still has a well-organized cadre base across Tamil Nadu.

If Edappadi K. Palaniswami succeeds in keeping the party united and reviving the welfare-driven image built by Jayalalithaa, AIADMK could once again emerge as a strong force in Tamil Nadu politics.
