First-of-its-kind Passing Out Parade to be held for 1st Agniveer batch

Marking the completion of training of future water warriors, a first-of-its-kind Passing Out Parade (POP) is scheduled to be held on March 28, 2023. For the first time, a post-sunset POP is being organised at INS Chilka. Traditionally, the event is always held in the morning hours.

The maiden post-sunset event at INS Chilka will have Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar as the Chief Guest and Reviewing Officer of the POP. Vice Admiral MA Hampiholi, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Southern Naval Command would also be present at the event along with other senior officers and dignitaries.

The POP on March 28 is also going to be historic as it will be the first-ever passing out of Agniveers from any military training establishment in the country. The event will witness the successful passing out of 2,600 Agniveers including 273 women Agniveers.

What’s more special?

The maiden POP for Agniveers is going to be an event comprising many ‘firsts’. For the first time on March 28, ‘General Bipin Rawat Rolling Trophy’ for the ‘Woman Agniveer Trainee Standing First in Overall Order of Merit’ would be presented to the deserving woman Agniveer by the daughters of the Late General Bipin Rawat. The award has been instituted after India’s first Chief of Defence Staff’s contribution towards the transformational Agnipath scheme.

The event will be attended by popular sports personalities and armed forces veterans as the Guests of Honour. Among sportswomen, Padma Shri winner PT Usha and former women’s cricket captain Mithali Raj will be present at the Parade. The presence of veteran sailors, who have excelled in their Service as well as post-retirement careers, will serve as inspirational models for the Agniveers.

Agniveers in Indian Navy

In line with the Agnipath recruitment scheme, the Indian Navy oriented its selection, training, and deployment methodology to lay the groundwork for a modern, dynamic, younger, and technically equipped future-ready force.

The Navy also leveraged the opportunity to start recruiting women Agniveers. As a result, in November 2022, the naval force inducted close to 2600 Agniveers, including 273 women Agniveers, and they began their training at INS Chilka. This first batch of Agniveers also includes the women and men who participated in the Indian Navy RD Parade Contingent at the Kartavya Path on January 26th of this year.

The 16-week training programme for the first batch of Agniveers will culminate with this historic Passing Out Parade. The presence of eminent veteran sailors, sportswomen and senior Naval officials in the post-sunset POP would be a landmark moment for the future naval warriors.
