Final NRC list of Assam published; State govt assures those left out can appeal in Foreigners’ Tribunals

With 3 days left to publish final NRC in Assam, officers working round the clock for ‘error-free’ list, say govt officials – Firstpost

In Assam, the Final National Register of Citizens (NRC) list was released on Saturday. Names of 3.11 crore applicants have been included whereas 19.07 lakh have been excluded from the list.

NRC State Coordinator’s office said in Guwahati that the status of both inclusion and exclusion can be checked online on the NRC website <www.nrcassam.nic.in>.

The hard copies of the Supplementary List of Inclusions are available for public viewing at the NRC Seva Kendras, offices of the deputy commissioner and offices of the Circle Officer during office hours.

Any person who is not satisfied with the outcome of the claims and objections can file appeal before the Foreigners Tribunals. The state government has assured that those left out of the final NRC will not be detained. They can appeal against their exclusion in the Foreigners’ Tribunals and subsequently, move higher courts.

Assam government will establish 400 Foreigners’ Tribunals in the state to deal with such appeals.

AIR correspondent reports,  the process of updation of NRC was carried out by the Registrar General of India and was being closely monitored by the Supreme Court. The process started in 2013 as per order of the apex court.

The NRC has immense significance for the people of Assam as the state witnessed a six-year-long movement between 1979 and 1985 seeking detection and deportation of illegal Bangladeshis.

The draft NRC, which was published last year, excluded names of over 40 lakh people from the document due to some discrepancies in their documents. Over 36 lakh of them applied afresh to get their names included in the final NRC.

AIR correspondent reports, the much-awaited final NRC list has been published in Assam with the exclusion of over 19 lakh people. No untoward incident has been reported as security forces remained .

Most of the political parties including the BJP and Asom Gana Parishad expressed displeasure on the final version of NRC. Several organizations including Assam Public Works and All Assam Students Union are also not happy with the outcome.

According to them, the number of excluded people should have been more.

Now the excluded people would go to the Foreigners’ Tribunals challenging their exclusion and the Assam Government already announced to provide legal aid to the needy people.
