Fight or get weird of COVID 19, gather inner strength from Sumithira’s advice in Ramayan

Written by Amruthavalli

The philosophical and spiritual side of when we should fight and when we should supplicate or prostrate before the crisis which is otherwise called as ‘act of God’ is well described in the Hindu mythology, Vedas and in our ancient tradition called Hinduism.

Today India remains secular purely due to our sacred Sanadhana dharma and Vasudaiva kudumbakam ethos of Hinduism.  People in general believe that the novel coronavirus has not only destroyed our economy but also the human relationship, values and has installed disbelief over the fellowman whether he might carry the virus and must be kept away.

Suspicion, fear, lack of trust and lack of enthusiasm are daunting our nation after the lockdown.

The present government at the centre under the Prime Minister Honourable Modi has taken great steps to curb the spread of the virus and to prevent human causality.  But due to our societal outlook and family concept, we could not eliminate the virus totally.  In this hour of crisis man must goes back to our ancient tradition and culture and must imbibe the essence of Ramayana to succour the pandemic.   Whenever an act of God strikes man, man must learn to be humble, humane and spiritual and must render mutual help and goodwill, instead of being fearful, despondent, hopeless, frustrated and unenthusiastic.

In accepting certain realities and then dealing all such challenges with our complete devotion to Lord Ram and Lord Krisha alone shall help to minimize the post effects of any catastrophe of such magnitude caused by novel coronavirus.

About how man must accept the new change (new normal) as prescribed by the scientific world has its best mention in our epic granth -Ramayana.

One of the less known and untold persona in Ramayana is Sumithira, the mother of Lakshmana, who was the avatar of Athisesha nag and brother of Lord Ram.

The coronation of Ram was decided but on the previous night to the coronation of Lord Ram, Kaikeyi, one of the wives of Dasaratha the king of Ayodhya and father of Lord Ram went and told him about the boon that he had granted to her once and the boon that she asked for sanction was the exile of Lord Ram to forest for 14 years and coronation of Bharat the son of Kaikeyi as king of Ayodhya.

King Dhasaratha helplessly agreed to Kaikeyi and Lord Ram prepared to go to forest for long 14 years.  Sita too had decided to accompany Ram and so was Lakshman.   Just minutes prior to their exile to forest, Lakshman went to seek the blessings of his mother Sumithira.

The advice granted by Sumithira through the following versus to Lakshman is very powerful, eternal, ageless and even today it is relevant and scientific.

The present generation must recite to practice the essence Sumithira’s advice to Lakshman.

रामम् दशरथम् विद्धि माम् विद्धि जनक आत्मजाम् |
अयोध्याम् अटवीम् विद्धि गच्च तात यथा सुखम् ||

Ramam dasharatham Vidhi, Mam Vidhi Janakathmajam,

Ayodhyam Ataveem Vidhi, Gacha Tata Yatha Sukham

The essence of the advice was that Lakshman should see Lord Ram as his father Dhasaratha and Sita as his mother and so shall he must gracefully accept the forest as Ayodhay and must undertake the journey to success and happiness.

When the act of God strikes the humanity, we must not shatter and go hopeless and instead must draw our renewed strength and confidence from our sacred scriptures like Ramayana.  We must fight together and at the same time must also accept the reality that the pandemic of such proportion requires hard measures and such hard measures are bound to cause serious ripples and disruptions to our economy and livelihood.

The entry of coronavirus and its destruction must unite Indians to re-trace our tradition and the essence of Indian ethos and sacred values of Hinduism.  We must gain new confidence and hope from the present situation rather than criticising all the wonderful measures taken by the Government of India under Modi.

We should be determined and at the same time we must also submit and surrender our determination at times to deal the crisis especially when the crisis is beyond the control of human force.  We must follow the collective spirit and sense in verbatim and literatim to arrest the pandemic.

The pandemic that we face today, we, the Indians must collectively fight and also we, the Indians by working together, must rebuild the vision of NEW INDIA as envisaged by our Honourable Prime Minister.

Our measures to fight the pandemic must be born from the graceful acceptance of the reality and not from frustration and hopelessness.

India must retrace its spiritual tradition to enthuse people to imbibe the philosophical concepts of Ramayan to remain calm and confident in the hour of crisis.

Playing politics, criticizing the government, questioning the measures taken so far should not be method youths should follow to solve or fix the problem but instead Indians must work together with high level of altruism, commitment and patriotism to rebuild our economy and New India.    If we stay together, we shall win.  Spiritual consecration and not pecuniary force should drive us from within.
