History and significance of Border Security Force (BSF)
Until 1965, India’s borders with Pakistan were guarded by the State Armed Police Battalion. After Pakistan attacked Sardar Post, Char Bet and Baria Bet on 9 April 1965 in Kutch, Gujarat. The Government of India felt the need for a Special Border Security Force under the Center which would be an armed and trained force to monitor the international border with Pakistan. As a result of the recommendations of the Committee of Secretaries, the Border Security Force (BSF) came into existence on December 01 1965. KF Rustomjee was its first head and founder of BSF. In 1965, the Border Security Force was formed with a total of 25 battalions, which further continued to expand in the North East for the prevention of terrorism.
At present, 192 battalions of Border Security Force (including 03 NDRF battalions) and 07 Regiment of Artillery are deployed to guard the international border of India-Pakistan and India-
