DCGI approves Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin and Oxford Astra Zeneca’s Covishield for emergency use in country

Drugs Controller General of India, DGCI has  given approval for restricted use in emergency situation of two Covid19 vaccines- Astra Zeneca’s Covishield and Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin.

The decision of the DGCI came after the Subject Expert Committee (SEC) of Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) recommended for their emergency use.

The  expert panel of the drug regulator gave its recommendation for the emergency use authorisation of Oxford AstraZeneca’s Covishield and Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin COVID-19 vaccines.

On January 1, Covishield was recommended for emergency use while COVAXIN was recommended for restricted use yesterday.  

The announcement in this regard was made by DGCI V G Somani The Drug Controller General of India VG Somani said during a press conference this morning that both firms submitted data on their trial runs and both have been granted permission for restricted use.
