Cyclone Amphan Updates: More than 1.37 lakh evacuated across Odisha

Cyclone Amphan, which is considered to be one of the worst storms over the Bay of Bengal in the last 20 years, hit the coastal districts of Odisha at 8.30 am today with wind speeds of over 100 kilometres per hour.

The Naveen Patnaik-led government in Odisha evacuated more than 1.37 lakh people from coastal and other adjoining districts to makeshift shelter homes till yesterday evening. The authorities have lodged the evacuees in these shelter homes while ensuring social distancing norms.

The next six to eight hours are going to be crucial as Cyclone Amphan is likely to make landfall on Wednesday near Sunderbans in West Bengal.
