In the modern world, air travel is a crucial aspect of our daily lives. It connects us to people and places near and far, but it can also be a source of stress and frustration. Long lines, endless wait times, and endless verification processes are just some of the issues passengers face on a regular basis. But with the launch of the Digi Yatra policy, that’s about to change.
The Digi Yatra Policy: Transforming the Way We Fly
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has launched the Digi Yatra policy, which aims to revolutionize the air travel experience for passengers. This policy introduces a biometric boarding system that uses Facial Recognition Technology to provide a seamless, hassle-free experience for travelers. The main objective of the policy is to enhance passenger experience by eliminating the need for verification of ticket and ID at multiple touch points and to achieve better throughput through existing infrastructure using a Digital Framework.
The implementation of Digi Yatra is under way and is being carried out by airport operators, with the cost being covered by them. The Ministry of Civil Aviation is not providing any financial support for its implementation. However, airport operators and airline operators are working to promote the policy by making in-flight announcements, providing help desk support, and using social media.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has been given the responsibility of implementing the Biometric Boarding System at Kolkata, Pune, Vijayawada, and Varanasi airports. The implementation of Digi Yatra will take place in phases, with the first phase already being launched on December 1st, 2022, at Delhi, Bangalore, and Varanasi airports. The implementation of Digi Yatra at Kolkata, Pune, Vijayawada, and Hyderabad airports is planned for March 2023.
Digi Yatra Central Ecosystem
M/s Dataevolve Solutions has built the facial recognition technology (FRT) based Digi Yatra Central Ecosystem, which was selected through a national start-up challenge run by NITI Aayog under the Atal Innovation Mission. This new system provides passengers with a touchless, paperless check-in and boarding process, making the air travel experience even smoother and more convenient.
Digi Yatra: A Voluntary Experience for Passengers
Digi Yatra is a voluntary facility for passengers that provides a seamless and hassle-free experience at the airport. This policy eliminates the need for central storage of passenger’s Personally Identifiable Information (PII) data, as all data is encrypted and stored in the passenger’s smartphone. The data is only shared with the airport of travel origin for a limited time, and is purged from the system within 24 hours of the flight. With the implementation of Digi Yatra, passengers will be able to complete touchless passenger validation through FRT, resulting in saved time at various touchpoints such as entry to the airport, Security Hold Area (SHA), and boarding area, without any intervention from the CISF.
The Future of Air Travel
The implementation of Digi Yatra marks a new era in the aviation industry, providing passengers with a more efficient and convenient air travel experience. The phased implementation of Digi Yatra across various airports in the country will lead to a digital transformation of the aviation sector, making air travel a stress-free and enjoyable experience for everyone as the country gets ready to experience the future of air travel with Digi Yatra.
