There is enough fire in Assam on Citizenship Amendment Bill, thanks to all kinds of political propaganda running in the state. But let me highlight an ‘EXPLOSIVE TRUTH’ dated back to 2012. This may uncover the hypocrisy of a major political party.
These days Congress Assam unit is boldly opposing the Citizenship Amendment Bill, in Assam led from the front by veteran Congress leader & Former Assam CM Tarun Gogoi. Tarun Gogoi even joined the protest rally organised by Leftist leaders Akhil Gogoi, Hiren Gohain & left inclined journalist Manjit Mahanta.
But what many may not know or conveniently ignored a ‘HARD TRUTH’ of Tarun Gogoi led Government is that it was his govt that sought ‘Citizenship for persecuted Hindu Bengalis, Buddhists who migrated from Bangladesh’ in the year 2012 when both Centre & State was ruled by CONGRESS.
The then CM of Assam, Tarun Gogoi had submitted a memorandum to the then Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on April 20, 2012, pleading that religious minorities who had to flee due to discrimination & religious persecution at the time of partition, should not be treated as foreigners & given citizenship.
Let me quote a news article of 2012, updated on June 2015 titled: “Congress seeks citizenship for Hindu Bengalis, Buddhists who migrated from Bangladesh”
The first paragraph of this news article reads as: “Congress has sought citizenship for Hindu Bengalis who moved to Assam from the erstwhile East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) following atrocities and torture” (end of quote)
At an executive meeting of Assam Pradesh Congress committee (APCC), the then APCC president Anjan Dutta said, “We will take up the unresolved issue of citizenship for the Bengali Hindus, Buddhists, Christians and people of other minority communities who came to Assam after being subjected to inhuman torture post the partition of India.”
Dutta also added, “These people were citizens of undivided India & they were forced to flee their own homes for saving their lives after being subjected to atrocities on the grounds of religion. The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee urges the Centre to grant citizenship to all such people, taking into consideration historical reality and the humanitarian aspect.”
The then State forest and environment minister & Congress leader Rockybul Hussain said, “These people should not be treated as foreigners, should be accorded basic human rights like access to courts and education, should not face the threat of deportation and should be granted citizenship in the same manner as in Gujarat and Rajasthan where people under similar situation were granted Indian citizenship.”
Now why the Assam Congress and it’s leader Mr Tarun Gogoi is protesting the Citizenship Amendment Bill? Wasn’t it his idea to grant citizenship to persecuted Hindu Bengali from Bangladesh? Why is such blunt display of HYPOCRISY shown by Congress? Why no one is questioning it? Interestingly, no media houses or TV channels has touched this fact and these questions to Tarun Gogoi. Why such immunity given to Assam Congress?
Whereas, Congress is fully utilizing this immunity and opportunity to fool the people of Assam once again.
Since there is no major alternative to BJP is Assam and the regional political party, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) is not an organized force today, so all political benefits of the ongoing massive anti CAB protest is going to help Congress tremendously. And Congress is leaving no stone unturned to dislodge the current BJP Government in the state. Congress will eventually come to power in Assam and will capture all Lok Sabha Seats in the state
