Indsamachar Beuro : In Ganapati Atharvashirsha a mention comes as त्वं चत्वारिवाकूपदानि, meaning “ Oh Ganesha, you are speech personified. You are the 4 types of speech & the root source of sound”
Let us explore what are the types of speech and why Ganesha is called as speech personified.
In Vedas speech, its type and Gayatri are mentioned in details. In Saraswati Rahasyopkhyan it is mentioned
क्ल यद्वाग्वदन्त्य विचेतानानि, राष्ट्री देवानाँ निषसाद् मन्द्रा। चतस्रव लर्ज्ज दुदुरे पयाँसि, क्व ल्विदस्याः परमं जगाम॥
Speech is all pervasive, it is content of all the living and unloving beings of the universe. It is formed in differently abled and low intellectuals also. It moves the universal energy movement. We do not know how and where will we be able to trace the real essence of speech.Mantra (hymns) is a basic content of any Indian philosophical foundation. Before we explore relationship of Ganesh with speech, let us understand what Mantra is.
Prapanch sartantra says Mantra as
मननात्सर्वं भवानाँ गरुणात्संसार सागरात्। मन्त्र रुपा हि तटछक्तिर्मं तनत्राण रुपिणी॥
Mind, contemplation, and emotions takes form of Mantra (Man is mind Tra means form). Though the sounds would be same but it will take unlimited forms.
ऐं चत्वारि वाक् परिमिता पदानि, तानि विदुर्वाह्मणा यं मनीषिणः। गुहा त्रीणि निहिता नेंगयन्ति, तुरीर्य वाचो मनुष्या वदन्ति॥
Speech has 4 steps, Para, Pashyanti, Madhyama and vaikhari. Where Para, Pashyanti and Madhyama are hideen and the outer form is Vaikhari (which human being use as language).
परायामंकुरी भूय पश्यन्ताँ द्विदलीकृता॥ मध्यमायाँ मुकुलिता बैखर्या विकसीकृता। पूर्व यथोदिता वाग्विलोमेनास्तगा भवेत्॥
Speech comes out of Para, she is developed in pashyanti and takes form of branches, in madhyama it gets blossom, and the outcome is Vaikhari.
In these above texts how speech has a deep rooted process is clearly mentioned.
In modern management when we talk about Outcome and Intent, its parallel to the knowledge about speech and act given in Vadas.
In modern days when we talk about behavior as a tip of iceberg, and it is deep under see which has basis as intent, values, growth, psychology, preferences, traits and belief.
In this model Vaikhari (the speech and behavior) is sources by Para, Pashyanti and Madhyama.
Para is nothing but the root where the images and beliefs are visualized. Pashyanti is the stage where belief interacts with intellect, and it takes form of images, feelings and word. At the sage of Madhyama, one makes there abstract to come in existence of thoughts. The outcome of this psychological phenomenon is nothing but Vaikhari.
In Ganpati Atharvashirsha, Ganesha is personified to this state of psychological process when we bring emotions and feelings through the words and expression, by following the stages of Para, pashyanti and Madhyama.
Nowhere is it mentioned the words and emotions are bad, they are existing based on the Samskara (development) of the soul. Hence the liked or disliked the ultimate truth formed in words and emotions are nothing but Ganesha.
Hence the speech that we carry is rooted in our upbringing, thought process, belief system, growth and surrounding. May all get the best of the nurturing environment for that tip of iceberg.
ॐ सह नाववतु। सह नौ भुनक्तु। सह वीर्यं करवावहै। तेजस्वि नावधीतमस्तु मा विद्विषावहै। ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ॥
Om, May we all be protected, May we all be nourished, May we work together with great energy, May our intelect be sharpened (may our study be effective)
Let there be no Animosity amongst us, Om, peace (in me), peace (in nature), peace (in divine forces)
