Centre clarifies there is no ban on import of IT Hardware like tablets and laptops after obtaining valid license

The Centre has clarified that there is no ban on the import of IT Hardware like tablets and laptops as such devices can be imported after obtaining a valid license by companies or traders. Yesterday, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, DGFT issued a notification regarding this, citing safety concerns of users. Sources said the DGFT has prepared a portal, and companies and traders can apply online for getting license which license will be issued very soon if details are filled in properly. The sources also clarified that the government is extending all support to Industry for clearance of shipment, if any in transit.

India has sufficient capacity and capability for manufacturing of IT Hardware devices and to boost further production. The government has notified Production Linked Incentive, PLI, Scheme 2.0 for IT Hardware. The scheme is expected to lead a total production of nearly 3.29 lakh crore rupees worth of IT Hardware and create 75,000 additional jobs in five to six years. Under it, 44 companies have already been registered.
