BJP clinches landslide victory in urban local body elections in Uttar Pradesh

The ruling Bhartiya Janata Party clinched a landslide victory in urban local body elections in Uttar Pradesh. The Party has won the mayor seats of seven districts and are leading on remaining 10 mayor seats where elections were held in two phases on 4th and 10th of May. Counting is still going on at many seats and some results may be announced late at night.

Party candidate Bihari Lal Arya won the mayor seat of Jhansi district while Girish Pati Tripathi won Ayodhya seat. Ashok Tiwari, party’s Mayor candidate, won the Varanasi seat. BJP nominee Ajay Singh won the mayor seat of Saharanpur district.

In the last elections in 2017, there were 16 mayor seats in state and the party had won 14 of them while the remaining two seats went to the opposition fold. BJP also got more than double seats from last time in the Nagar Palika and Nagar Panchayat elections. In urban areas, BJP proved its dominance again as most of its candidates have won.

Addressing the party workers at Party office in Lucknow Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath thanked the voters for giving the opportunity in the urban local body elections and by-elections.

The victory in local body elections is significant as the party not only doubled its tally from the last elections in Nagar Palika and Nagar Panchayats but also clean sweeped the Mayor seats across the state. In a first, Muslim candidates were given tickets by the party and many of them tested the success which reflects that the party is now making in roads into the Muslim community, particularly in the pasmanda catagory.

The results can also be termed as public’s approval to the law and order policy and governance of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath as the opposition made many allegations regarding the lawlessness in the state after the murder of Mafia turned politician Atiq Ahmad. Results are a big booster for Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath who single handedly ran the election campaign in state and took the party to the path of victory.
