Bangladesh reports highest COVID19 infection since July 2

The spike in COVID 19 cases continued in Bangladesh on Thursday with 3587 new cases reported over the last 24 hours since Wednesday.

This is the highest single day COVID 19 infection in the country since July 2.

A total of 34 people died in the same period taking the death toll to 8797 since the first case was reported in March last year.

The spike in COVID 19 cases is also reflected in the percentage of positive cases in the samples tested for the virus.

The positivity rate has climbed from about 3 percent on Feb. 28 to over 13 percent as on Thursday. The recovery rate in the country stands at 90.67 percent.

The mass vaccination drive against COVID 19 in Bangladesh is continuing.

On Thursday, more than 70,000 people were vaccinated taking the total number of vaccinated people to over 51.39 lakh.

In the meanwhile, Education Minister Dipu Moni has said that the closure of schools and colleges may be extended till Eid if the Coronavirus cases continue to surge.

She said that the final decision will be taken only after the meeting of the National Technical Advisory Committee.

Earlier, the government had announced the opening of schools on March 30 and colleges on 24 May.

Responding to the sudden increase in the COVID 19 cases, the government has ramped up efforts to tackle the pandemic.

Health Minister Zahid Maleque announced on Wednesday that 3000 more beds will be added to hospitals across the country to deal with the increased cases of COVID 19.

The Minister however denied that there is any proposal for lockdown in the country as of now.
