India-Australia, representatives of the Global South

Both the leading countries of ‘Global South’, India and Australia, share friendly and cordial relations based on common values and democratic principles. The Strategic Partnership between the two countries was elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in June 2020 which has been strengthened and deepened through frequent high-level exchanges and enhanced cooperation across sectors. Prime Minister Albanese’s visit is expected to provide further momentum to the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

QUAD Countries at G20

India and Australia are two of the four members of QUAD. It is pertinent to note that Australia has been a democratic and strategic ally of India. On March 3, 2023, India hosted the Quad Foreign Ministers Meeting on the sidelines of the G20 in New Delhi. The meeting was chaired by External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, and witnessed the participation of Foreign Minsters of Australia and Japan and the Secretary of State of the United States of America. The Ministers also reviewed progress made by the Quad in pursuit of its constructive agenda and implementation of initiatives aimed at addressing contemporary priorities of the region.

Defined as the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QSD), the Quad is a diplomatic network of four countries committed to supporting a free and open Indo-Pacific that is inclusive and resilient. It complements our other bilateral, regional, and multilateral cooperation, including with ASEAN member states and Pacific partners.
