In the United States, at least 25 people were killed in the flash floods that hit the Appalachia region of eastern Kentucky yesterday. President Joe Biden has declared the floods a major disaster and ordered federal aid to help local rescuers. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said the death toll is expected to rise.
He said hundreds of people have been rescued by boat or helicopter. Rescue efforts are hindered due to persisting power outages. The flooding after torrential rain caused mudslides and made roads impassable.
Scientists say climate change is triggering more extreme weather events like the Kentucky flooding.
