In the run up to the Lok Sabha elections, Anuj Sharma assumed charge of Kolkata Commissioner of Police. He was Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) prior to this.
Anuj Sharma replaced Rajeev Kumar, who has been moved to the post of ADG & IGP, Criminal Investigation Department (CID), West Bengal. Rajeev was appointed as Kolkata Police Commissioner in 2016.
Addressing a press conference, Anuj Sharma emphasised that the safety of women and service to the people of Kolkata have been the main motto of the Kolkata police. He requested the cooperation of the citizens in serving the city better.
This change of guard happened in just about a week after the Central Bureau of Investigation started investigating the Saradha chit fund and Rose Valley scandals. The CBI questioned Rajeev Kumar in Shillong, as per a directive by the Supreme Court of India.
Rajeev is accused of withholding certain documents related to the two scandals.
