Amazon launches ad-supported News app on Fire TV and Fire Tablets

First it was videos, the it was music and now it is news. After capturing establishing its dominion using its Prime Video and Prime Music platforms, Amazon is all set to enter the news space with a new news app. The Seattle-based tech giant has started rolling out News, a unique app available exclusively on its platform that aggregates news from various sources and gives Amazon users an easy way to access news content without paying any additional amount.

Amazon has started rolling out its News app on to its Fire TV devices it will be available for users in the coming weeks. The News will also be available on the Fire tablets. However, the company hasn’t detailed a timeline for it yet. Amazon says that the News app will be available on Fire Tablets “soon”.

The new ad-supported news app will automatically appear in the Fire TV titled as “News”. Amazon says that users don’t need to download the app or subscribe to it for using it. “The News app will be automatically downloaded to your Fire TV device, and you should see it on your home screen in the ‘Your Apps and Channels’ row,” Fire TV product manager, Puneet Puri wrote in a blog post on Medium.

Users will not only be able to customise the app based on their preferred news channels and the categories that interest them, but they will also be able to browse through different stories without having to navigate away from the content that they are currently watching. In addition to that they will be able to watch live news from CBS News Live and Yahoo News using a dedicated section called Live within the app. “If you want to know what news is trending online, there is a dedicated section for trending stories and a section that has news broken into categories such as Politics, Tech, Finance, Business and Sports,” the Fire TV product manager wrote in the post.
