Air quality in Delhi continues to remain in ‘very poor category’

The air quality in the national capital continued to remain in ‘very poor category’ today. As per the India Meteorological Department, the overall air quality Index (AQI) at 8 am stood at 368. The quality in NCR region is also remain in ‘very poor’ category. The air quality in Noida Sector 62, was even worse at 381, while in Gurugram the air quality index was at 304.

The air quality in Faridabad was at 370 ,while Ghaziabad also witnessed the AQI level at 327 which is classified as very poor. Meanwhile, Supreme Court yesterday directed the Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan governments to file affidavits listing the steps taken by them to prevent this. In its observation, the court said that various steps taken by different agencies are not effective in tackling the situation as the quality of air in NCR has not improved.

This deterioration is primarily attributed to sluggish wind speed and a drop in temperatures. During the winter season, unfavorable meteorological conditions, coupled with a combination of emissions from firecrackers and paddy straw burning also contribute to the deterioration of air quality Delhi-NCR.
