United States said that it was concerned about movements of Chinese forces on the border with Hong Kong and urged Beijing to honour the territory’s autonomy as pro-democracy protests continued.
In a satement issued today, State Department spokesperson said that United States is deeply concerned by reports of Chinese paramilitary movement along the Hong Kong border. The spokesperson said, the protests reflect broad and legitimate concerns among Hong Kong’s citizenry over the loss of autonomy, which was agreed in the deal between London and Beijing over returning the former British colony to China in 1997. The protest forced the partial closure of Hong Kong’s international airport yesterday.
Meanwhile, China has slammed attacks on its citizens by pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong during a second day of chaos at the city’s airport. The rallies, which had paralysed one of the world’s busiest travel hubs, ended with ugly clashes on Tuesday night that included protesters beating two men.
