President Droupadi Murmu presides over 72nd convocation day of Panjab University

President Droupadi Murmu today stressed the upliftment of the deprived and backward sections of society for the inclusive and sustainable development of the country. Presiding over the 72nd Convocation of Panjab University, Chandigarh, the President expressed satisfaction that Panjab University is promoting innovation, research and global participation as per the News Education Policy, keeping in mind the target of Viksit BHARAT.

Congratulating the students, the President said that the students should keep a positive mindset and be familiar with emergent technologies to remain ready to face future challenges. The President expressed happiness that the females are excelling in every field, and in the convocation, 80 per cent of the recipients of degrees and medals are females. She praised the University for its achievements.

The President honoured the renowned mathematician Dr. R.J. Hans-Gill, and social worker Sushri Nivedita Raghunath Bhide were conferred honorary degrees. Dr. R.J. Hans-Gill received the Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa), while Sushri Nivedita Raghunath Bhide was awarded the Doctor of Literature (Honoris Causa). Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya, Punjab Governor Banwari Lal Purohit, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and other dignitaries accompanied the President on the occasion.

Additionally, several distinguished personalities were honoured for their significant contributions in their respective fields. Dr. Gurtej Singh Sandhu received the Vigyan Ratna, Dr. Harmohinder Singh Bedi Sahitya Ratna, Dr. Pushvinder Jit Singh Udyog Ratna, and Dr. Jaspinder Narula Kala Ratna. The President honoured Ms. Manu Bhaker with the Khel Ratna. During the convocation ceremony, around 812 Ph D students and 70 medal winner students received their degrees and medals. Those who received degrees today include 617 females, and among medal winners, 62 were females.
