Hurricane Ian moved across the Florida state of USA toward the Atlantic seaboard today after thrashing the state’s Gulf Coast with fierce winds, torrential downpours and raging surf that flooded oceanside communities.
The National Hurricane Centre has downgraded Ian to a category one storm as it moves inland. Ian brought high winds, heavy rains, storm surges and intense flooding to Florida yesterday after making the landfall in the afternoon and moving inland through the evening.
Local media reported that around 1.8 million homes were without power in Florida last evening.
According to media reports, Fort Myers and nearby Naples showed major flooding. Floodwaters surged into homes and swept away vehicles.
Dozens of shelters have been set up as authorities had issued mandatory evacuation orders for over 2 million people across the state of Florida.
