India supplied more than 180 tonnes of medical oxygen to Bangladesh during the Eid holidays under special arrangements.
The oxygen was imported by three companies of Bangladesh in eleven tankers on Wednesday through the Benapole border post.
Given the criticality of these supplies of Liquid Oxygen to hospitals in Bangladesh, ICP Petrapole officials in India provided a Green Corridor for Medical Oxygen export.
The supply of oxygen to Bangladesh will help it in the fight against COVID 19 which has been spreading in the country over the last several weeks.
The emergency import of oxygen continued despite the four day long Eid Holiday starting on July 20 in line with Prime Minister’s directives. Benapole port is open 24 hours to receive oxygen shipments.
A special team of Land Port officials, Custom officials, BSF and CNF agents was constituted to facilitate the supply of oxygen to Bangladesh. They were in regular contact with the High Commission of India in Dhaka and their Benapole counterparts
Kamlesh Saini, Director, Petrapole Land Port said, field level officials have been given special instructions to ensure that essential commodities like Liquefied Medical Oxygen could be cleared quickly from the Petrapole port.
