Sabarimala temple reopens today for 5 days

After a long gap of more nearly seven months, devotees of Lord Ayyappa will finally get to enter the hills shrine in Sabarimala for the first time after the coronavirus-induced lockdown on March 24 when the temple doors open on Friday.

The temple will reopen for 5 days at 5 pm on Friday evening, but the devotees will be allowed to enter the pilgrimage site only from Saturday morning at 5 am, which is the first day of the Malayalam month ‘Thulam’, sources in the Travancore Devaswom Board, which runs the shrine, said.

All devotees will have to mandatorily present their Covid-19 negative certificates, which have to be conducted 48 hours before their visit, and book their darshan time and date via the virtual queue system, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said.

Additionally, they are expected to carry a medical certificate which states that they are fit to trek the hills. All major arrangements have been put in place to ensure pilgrims do not face any hassle.

As per the state government order, only 250 devotees will be allowed to enter each day.

Police personnel have also been deployed in adequate numbers to ensure all Covid-related protocols are followed.

As per the guidelines, only those between 10 and 60 years will be permitted to offer prayers and all pilgrims are expected to carry masks, sanitisers and gloves.

Vijayan reiterated that social distancing should be maintained and there should be no gathering of devotees.

Meanwhile, all other routes to Sabarimala, except those via Vadasserikkara and Erumeli, have been shut.

In order to provide maximum assistance to pilgrims, medical and para-medical staff has been deployed at hospitals in Nilackal, Pamba and Sannidhanam, news agency PTI reported.

However, devotees are not allowed to stay at Nilackal, Pamba or Sannidhanam due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
